Borussia Dortmund and Jadon Sancho have a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ in place that the winger will be allowed to join Manchester United in the upcoming summer transfer window if his price tag is met before a pre-set deadline, it has been claimed.
United are thought to have made Sancho their priority target this summer, with the market opening next Friday, after wanting to sign him last year.
They are in talks with Dortmund with negotiations currently putting the two clubs around £20million apart as the Germans hold out for a large number of add-ons.
Twelve months ago, a £108m valuation priced the Red Devils out of a deal as they waited in hope that Dortmund would lower their demands for the England winger.
Now, though, there is a belief that Sancho will be available for less that and could be brought back to his homeland from the Bundesliga at a price of nearer to £80m.
Sancho is widely regarded as one of Europe’s finest attackers having starred at the Westfalenstadion since a £7m switch from Manchester City in 2017.
The 21-year-old recorded 16 goals and 20 assists in 38 matches last term, sharing his minutes across roles on the right wing and left wing as well as playing occasionally at No 10.
Sancho has managed 114 direct goal contributions in just 137 matches for the German giants despite his age and won his first major trophy in the DFB Pokal last month.
And having given several years’ service to Dortmund, they are willing to part ways with Sancho – who will represent England at Euro 2020 this summer – for the right price.
BBC Sport say that further, an agreement is in place between the player and the club that a deal will be done, provided United put the money on the table before a date which is as of yet unknown.
Last year, Dortmund wanted £108m for Sancho before the start of their pre-season preparations and after not getting it, didn’t entertain United’s overtures.
It remains to be seen if United will offer the right amount of cash at the right time in order to broker an agreement, but their desire to sign the forward is certainly there.
Fabrizio Romano has previously claimed that Sancho ‘loves’ the idea of playing for United next season, and says a deal could be done for £77m.
Romano told The United Stand last month: “It’s an open race. What I’m told is it’s an open race. Last summer Manchester United were alone in the race, they had the opportunity to sign Sancho.
“They were really close and they didn’t sign him. Now United are in the race, the player loves the opportunity of joining Manchester United so his position is not changing.
“He would love to join Manchester United. But also Liverpool are looking at the player if they sell some players in attacking positions.
“Let’s see what happens with Chelsea. At the moment I’m told Chelsea have not had anything official with his agents or with Borussia Dortmund.
“At the moment Chelsea are not moving for Sancho but we can’t exclude that they are going to do it if they sell some players.
“At the moment it’s an open race, that’s how they describe the situation. But last summer he was really one step away from joining United.
“He had an agreement with United, he had contract set and his agent had no problem with United. They never made any problems with the player. It’s not like this.
“Sancho wants to join, the agent wants Sancho to move. The situation is so clear – it’s up to United to decide if they want to pay or not for Sancho.
“Dortmund have changed their position. It’s not €120m (£103m), it’s less than €100m (85m), so around €90m-€95m (£77m-£81m). The player is open to the move if an important bid will arrive. It’s up to Manchester United.”
