Manchester United’s top transfer target Raphael Varane reportedly prefers a move to Old Trafford rather than to Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
The news comes as the defender’s agents prepare for a meeting with Red Devils’ chiefs as a potential deal gathers pace.
Varane looks set to depart Real Madrid in this transfer window with talks over a new contract at Los Blancos breaking down.
The Frenchman has become a key player at the Bernabeu, winning three La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues with the Spanish giants.
But despite developing into one of the world’s best defenders during his time with Madrid, it appears unlikely he will play for the club again.
The 28-year-old’s current contract is entering its final year, but negotiations between the defender and club president Florentino Perez have reached an impasse.
The Daily Star report that he has rejected the offer of a two-year extension to his contract, though he is refusing to comment on any matters related to his situation until after Euro 2020.
It is stated that Madrid’s offer did come with the options of extra years, but the club’s poor financial situation means that there was no relative increase on his wages.
Varane is also unhappy that Perez opted to begin negotiations with Luka Modric, Lucas Vazquez and Sergio Ramos before him.
It has already been announced that Ramos will be leaving the Bernabeu this summer, with Varane now set to follow him out of the exit door.
Madrid cannot afford to allow Varane to leave the club on a free transfer next year and are set to demand a fee in the region of £50million.
United are one of the frontrunners for his signature, with the Red Devils in the market for a centre-back.
Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have failed to prove they can be long-term options at the heart of defence.
That means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made finding a new partner for Harry Maguire one of his top priorities for this summer’s window.
They have now received a major boost in their hopes of completing a deal, with the Star stating that Varane would prefer a move to Manchester.
French giants PSG are also believed to have approached Varane, but the defender is not currently interested in a return to his homeland.
And Varane’s representatives will this week seek to fly out to Old Trafford to meet with United and are looking to agree a four-year deal.
Madrid already appear to have signed a replacement for Varane, with David Alaba joining on a free transfer from Bayern Munich.
