Manchester United are considering using Anthony Martial in a swap deal to beat Chelsea to the signing of Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland, according to reports.
The Norway international scored 40 goals across all competitions last term. And while the Bundesliga giants have insisted he won’t be sold, a change of scenery could be on the cards.
Manchester United have already signed Tom Heaton and Jadon Sancho.
They’re also hopeful of landing Real Madrid star Raphael Varane, who is keen to join after a glittering decade in Spain.
And, now, Haaland could also be pursued.
According to Mundo Deportivo, United have been considering using Martial as bait to land the 21-year-old – who is one of the most talented players of his generation.
Dortmund were interested in signing the Frenchman back in 2017, when Jose Mourinho tried offloading him.
In the end, however, United kept Martial because of Joel Glazer – who considers the player to be the club’s very own version of Brazil legend Pele.
The report also states that the Red Devils are interested in acquiring Antoine Griezmann, too.
Barcelona are keen to jettison the France international in the wake of the coronavirus crisis, with the Catalan giants looking to balance the books.
And they’re eyeing Martial as a potential replacement, with the 25-year-old yet to realise his potential at the club.
Regarding Haaland, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer previously managed his compatriot at Molde.
But United will face strong competition from Chelsea to land the forward, with the Blues hopeful he’ll be moving to Stamford Bridge by the time the transfer window shuts.
They’ve already lost Olivier Giroud to AC Milan, while Tammy Abraham is attracting interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.
And Chelsea believe he can lead their line for many years to come, with the player himself reportedly keen on a move to Stamford Bridge.
Regarding Martial, Solskjaer hinted the player would be part of his squad when speaking after their 4-2 defeat to Queens Park Rangers.
Speaking about Jadon Sancho, he namedropped the forward when speaking about his attackers.
“It shows the fans that we mean business,” he said.
“We hope that we’ve got one of the best forwards in England for the next 10, 12 years. We’ve got Marcus – 23, we’ve got Mason who is a young lad.
So we have got an English core there and then we’ve got the added experience with Edinson, Anthony, Bruno, Jesse is coming back.
“So I think the forward line is looking really good.”
In April, Paul Scholes urged United to sign Haaland over Harry Kane.
“First and foremost, they need a number nine,” the former United midfielder said.
“I think the forwards they have are very good, but are any of them really a number nine, are they wide players? You just can’t make sense out of it, really.
“When [Edinson] Cavani’s played, he’s looked alright, but he’s picked up a few injuries. He’s at that age, it was always going to happen, he was always going to be bit-part.
“They need someone who is more permanent. I know Haaland is talked about a lot, he’s going to cost a lot of money. Harry Kane at Spurs, there are rumours that he might want to leave there.
“I think any one of them, you take any one of them, but I think if I had to choose, then Haaland would definitely be the one.
“Purely for his age, his ability, the timing of his career, he’s played under Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] before. I think it would make sense for everyone to do it, but there’s going to be other clubs in for him, so it will be difficult.
“I like Kane, I think he’s brilliant. When he first came onto the scene, I likened him to Ruud [van Nistelrooy], he’s a ruthless finisher, desperate to score goals.
“I just think at the stages of each one’s career, then you get more out of Haaland.”
