Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo is eager to win trophies at Old Trafford, Bruno Fernandes has claimed.

The Portugal international recently returned to the club from Juventus after 12 years away. And he could make his debut in Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Newcastle.

Manchester United signed Tom Heaton, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane back in the summer.

Then, late on, they decided to swoop for Ronaldo.

The Portugal international was persuaded into returning to the club by the likes of Fernandes, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra – having previously been on Manchester City’s radar.

Everybody associated with United is excited to see how the 36-year-old fares now he’s back in the Premier League.

And Fernandes, speaking to RTP3 after Portugal’s 3-0 win over Azerbaijan, insisted Ronaldo told him he’s eager to be successful.

“We know that enthusiasm will be high, everyone knows Cristiano and is very happy and confident to have him back,” he said.

“Us players are part of that confidence, we know what he can give us.

“Our focus and Cristiano’s, because of what I’ve already talked to him about, is to win what there is to win.

“Our goals remain and obviously, with Cristiano, we have one more reference to help us get closer to that.”

Ronaldo will be wearing the No 7 shirt at United after Edinson Cavani opted to give it up.

And Fernandes and his compatriot will be vital assets to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as they look to end their agonising wait for silverware.

Speaking after his return to United, Ronaldo recently claimed he was excited to play in front of their supporters again.

“Well, the fans is the key of football,” he said.

“Now, with all the stadiums full of supporters, it’s not the same that we had one year ago, those empty stadiums.

“The fans, they are the key, and I’m so glad. The Manchester United fans, they are special, I know, I remember very well.

“I know they still sing my music which has made me feel even more happy and my commitment is to give everything on the pitch, like I did before, like I do it all the time, and try to do my best, help the team score goals, make assists, win games, and I hope to see them very, very soon.”

Ronaldo also hailed Sir Alex Ferguson, while insisting he’d made the right decision.

“As everybody knows, since I signed for Manchester [United] at 18, Sir Alex Ferguson was the key,” he said.

“I remember when we played against Manchester when I was at Sporting Lisbon.

“For me, Sir Alex Ferguson is like a father in football for me. He helped me a lot, he taught me many things, and in my opinion of course he had a big role because the relationship that we had, we keep in touch all the time, and he’s an unbelievable person.

“I really like him a lot and he was the main key for me to be in the position that I am, that I signed for Manchester United.

“I think it’s the best decision that I have made it. It’s right on point in my opinion.

“I moved from Juve now to Manchester, it’s a new chapter.
