Antonio Conte to Man United: Job demands, meeting with board wanted and Glazers stance

Antonio Conte is a potential option should Manchester United sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian has overseen a difficult start to the season over at Old Trafford, despite being backed during the summer transfer window. And that’s led to talk he could lose his job.

Manchester United are adamant they’re behind Solskjaer, who was only given a new contract back in the summer.

But with results mixed so far this season, the Norwegian is fighting to silence his critics.

With United struggling, Conte has been linked with the role.

The Italian is currently out of work, having left Inter Milan by mutual consent back in the summer shortly after guiding them to Serie A glory.

So Idusport will now take a look at some of the things that have been reported over the past week.

Job Demands

According to Duncan Castles, speaking on Reach PLC’s Transfer Window podcast, Conte would demand full control of footballing matters if he took charge of United.

Castles said: “I think there are two obvious candidates in terms of coaches who have achieved at the top level of the game, who are out of work and would be available to Manchester United without compensation fees.

“One is Zinedine Zidane and one is Antonio Conte. Conte’s position, I’m told, is that he is interested in the Manchester United job but not without restrictions.

“Antonio Conte, when he chooses his next club, wants a club where he can win the Champions League.

“He wants to demonstrate, he’s wanted to do it for a long time, that he is one of the very best coaches in world football.

“To do that he knows he has to win the Champions League, so Manchester United are interesting because of the squad they’ve got, because of their status and because of the resource that is behind them.”

Board meeting wanted

Eurosport’s Dean Jones, speaking on Touchline Talk, has claimed Conte wants to meet with the Red Devils’ board to show what he’s capable of.

“Conte, we’ve seen that he can go into clubs short-term and have a big impact,” he said.

“I’m told, from somebody who spoke to Conte very recently, that he’s certainly interested in the idea.

“And he would love the chance to just pitch to the United board about how he would transform this team and how he would turn them into winners.

“But at the moment, there’s no signs he’s going to get the chance to make that pitch.”

Glazers ‘not sure’

According to Jan Aage Fjortoft, speaking on ESPN FC Extra Time, the Glazers ‘aren’t sure’ what to do regarding potentially sacking Solskjaer.

Fjortoft said: “What have they done before? They’ve tried everything.

“A copy of Sir Alex Ferguson [David Moyes], a guy from the outside who is mad Van Gaal, then a born winner Mourinho that didn’t work out, then they wanted one from the philosophy of Sir Alex Ferguson, where are they going now?

“There is no chance that they will go from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Conte, how is that alike?

“Will they go for Zinedine Zidane who is perhaps a bit like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer? He’s won a lot of Champions League’s, I’m not taking that away from him.

“I think this is one of the main things why they keep him because they’re not sure about the replacement either.”

Conte’s next job comments

Speaking in the summer, after leaving Inter Milan, Conte insisted his next club wouldn’t be determined by money.

“The market sets the price, but had I been obsessed by money, I would have stayed where I was in the past. I would have accepted compromises and obtained new contracts,” Conte told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I look for the projects instead and I am ready to stay at home if something is not convincing me. It has to do with vision, honesty and principles.

“Generally, I like challenges and I’ve accepted many of them during my career.

“Even the top clubs I coached were never the favourites when I arrived.”
