Barcelona midfielder to receive an additional €20 million as part of postponed salary

Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets is set to receive an additional €20 million apart from his usual salary as part of the deferral that he penned down last year, according to RAC1.

Busquets, 33, was one of the two players alongside Jordi Alba to have agreed to take a significant cut in the salary as the team tried to register Sergio Aguero in 2021.

The midfielder worked under a relatively lower salary throughout the 2021-22 football season but as part of the contract that was signed, it was all subject to deferment of payments.

And now that the season is over, Busquets will receive a lump sum payment in a single go.

Interestingly enough, it will be fascinating to see how Barcelona manage to approach the situation since they have already asked their captains to take a further reduction of upto 50%.

As it turns out though, the Barcelona veterans have outrightly denied to defer any more payments. The likes of Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets reduced their salary once during the pandemic followed by another wave last year.

And so, they have asked the team to look for other venues to resolve the issue at hand. On the other hand, however, a certain Sergi Roberto has accepted a lower his salary as he seems set to sign a new contract with the team.

So the plan for Barcelona from hereon is to move the other players on the card in order to balance the finances.

The exception, however, has been applied to those who have recently signed a new deal. This means the likes of Ronald Araujo, Ansu Fati, Pedri and most possibly Gavi will have no effect on their salaries.

Barcelona need to find a resolution and fast since Busquets is not the only player to whom they owe money. As reported earlier, the team also owes as much as €50 million to Gerard Pique over unpaid salary.
