Olivier Giroud’s time at Chelsea is coming to an end.
This is despite the Frenchman’s contract at Stamford Bridge being extended by a further 12 months, a decision that was made by the club back in April as revealed by director Marina Granovskaia.
“Olivier has been such a crucial part of so many big moments for this club, from his contribution to our FA Cup victory in 2018 to scoring 11 goals on the way to winning the Europa League in 2019,” she told the club’s official website last month.
“He has continued to score significant goals, and we will never forget his effort against Atletico Madrid on the way to winning the Champions League this season.
“With so much to still to play for, there was only one decision we could make when we exercised the option to extend his contract back in April.”
However, it is looking likely that Giroud will leave Chelsea this summer.
In fact, his exit could be confirmed as early as next week with reports in Italy claiming that he is set to undergo a medical with AC Milan on Monday.
Furthermore, it is understood that Giroud will also sign a two-year deal with the Rossoneri after they finally reached an agreement with the Blues regarding a transfer fee.
The report states that Chelsea have accepted €1m (£859k) plus another €1m (£859k) in rather difficult to complete performance-related bonuses, meaning the overall deal could reach £1.7m.
Speaking to RMC Sport, as per SempreMilan, last month, Giroud did hint at AC Milan being his next stop after leaving Chelsea amid Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s plea.
Ibrahimovic wants me at AC Milan? It’s always a pleasure to hear Zlatan say this kind of things, I’ll take it as an extra motivation,” he said.
“My future? I don’t want to talk about it, Milan is certainly an option among other ones.”
