Cristiano Ronaldo’s perfect response to Bruno Fernandes penalty statement on Instagram

Bruno Fernandes took to social media to acknowledge his penalty miss during Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United were losing in added time after Kortney Hause headed home two minutes before the end to score the eventual winner.

Hause gave away a penalty shortly after he scored, handling Fernandes’ cross with Mike Dean pointing to the penalty spot after help from his assistant referee.

Fernandes, who had scored 21 of his previous 22 penalty kicks for the Red Devils, skied his 23rd over the bar.

The 27 year-old took his miss to heart, posting a lengthy statement to social media outlining his intention to keep taking penalties for United.

Writing on photo and video-sharing platform Instagram, Fernandes said: “Nobody is more frustrated and disappointed than me for missing the penalty and the consequent defeat.

“I’ve always assumed my responsibilities and I’ve always embraced them under pressure in moments like this. Today, I failed.

“But I took a step forward and faced the challenge with the same ambition and responsibility as when, on the many other occasions, the ball ended up in the net.

“Criticism and contrasting opinions are a big part of football. I’ve learned to live with it, even using them to drive me on, and I consider it all a very important part of my commitment to never stop trying to improve and to become the best player I can possibly be, for me and the team.

“Today I once again took the responsibility given to me almost since I joined United and I will take it again without any fear or dread whenever called upon.”

United players and fans took to social media to react to Fernandes with David de Gea, Jesse Lingard, Cristiano Ronaldo, Diogo Dalot and Anthony Martial sending messages of support to their teammate.

Ronaldo did not need words, simply posting a ‘fist bump’ emoji as a comment to Fernandes’ post.

Lingard, de Gea and Martial all posted red heart emojis while Dalot wrote: “With you everyday of the week.”
