Jadon Sancho is set to be handed a new shirt number when his move to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund is finally announced.
United’s pursuit of Sancho is finally coming towards an end, after the Premier League club tried in vain to sign the forward last summer.
The club agreed a fee with Bundesliga side Dortmund whilst the player was still with England at Euro 2020, with just the medical and finer details to sort out after.
Fans have been waiting for over a week for the deal to be confirmed and, after being asked about Sancho on the weekend, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said, “From what I understand only paperwork, small little details, hopefully we can announce something.
Let’s get all the paperwork done and get him over the line and then I can say what I truly feel about the player.”
With the transfer seemingly days away from being announced, it’s now been revealed, according to The National News, that Sancho will wear the number 16 shirt.
The article had originally suggested the 21-year-old might wear the number 7, which he wears at Dortmund, but that has since been edited out leaving it clearer what shirt number the new signing will be given.
Whilst the seven shirt might be considered more apt for a winger, it is already being worn by Edinson Cavani, whilst Anthony Martial is number nine and Mason Greenwood is 11.
The 16 shirt might not be particularly iconic in football terms but at Old Trafford it was made legendary by Roy Keane.
It’s fair to say that the incoming 16 at Old Trafford is nothing like Keane, or his successor to the shirt Michael Carrick.
Since the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, the shirt has been worn by Marcos Rojo but he’s now better known for wielding a fire extinguisher than he is for playing for United.
With the Sancho transfer saga all but done, United have now turned their attention to making their defence better for next season.
Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane is the club’s number one target as they attempt to find a partner for Harry Maguire, and the deal is expected to be done soon. The club have also targeted Kieran Trippier at right back.
After those signings, Solskjaer may turn his attention to a midfielder in a deeper role, with talk the team could change to a 4-3-3.
United have been linked with a potential move for Wolves’ midfielder Ruben Neves.
