Manchester United are readying moves for Borussia Dortmund star Dan-Axel Zagadou and Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves under Ralf Rangnick’s orders.
Both players have been identified as solutions to their problems in the squad while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was a huge fan of the duo as well when he was in charge too.
Rangnick has had a tough time behind the scenes at Old Trafford after inheriting many of the issues his predecessor had.
A 1-0 loss to Wolves on Monday night marked the first defeat of the German’s reign, who is in charge until the end of the season.
But the circumstances surrounding the result has led to a toxic atmosphere at the club.
There have been multiple reports that the players are not happy with Rangnick’s training methods while the former RB Leipzig coach is desperate to bolster his squad in the January transfer window.
He is keen to bring in the kind of player that understands his system with Zagadou named among them.
According to Foot Mercato, United have upped their interest in the former Paris Saint-Germain trainee and have contacted his agent over the possibility of a transfer.
The defender’s contract expires at the end of the season, meaning clubs are free to speak to him over an agreement to sign in the summer for nothing.
Dortmund are keen to keep hold of Zagadou, who has also attracted the attention of Newcastle.
But that might be out of their power and it might be their best solution to sell up now to avoid losing him on a free transfer.
Solskjaer tried to sign the centre-back when he was in charge of the Red Devils but failed – while Neves was also on his shopping list.
The Portugal international was one of many to have a fine game against United on Monday night and it appears to have made some minds up at the club.
According to talkSPORT, Rangnick is keen to see the former Porto star arrive this month.
Several clubs have been interested in the 24-year-old, including Liverpool and Arsenal.
But United are set to ramp up their efforts soon to solve a problematic area of the pitch for the Red Devils.
Scott McTominay and Fred are currently the first-choice options in the middle for the club and have had their form questioned during the season.
Defence is another issue that became apparent on Monday night – with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof injured and Eric Bailly at the AFCON, there was a recall to the starting XI for Phil Jones – two years after his last appearance.
He is one of several players that are looking to leave this January, including Bailly who has not seen a return on the promise for more first-team football in the summer.
Both of them departing would leave United light at the back while Raphael Varane has also had injury troubles this season.
Zagadou’s arrival would help ease the burden for Rangnick, who has fixed a leaky backline from Solskjaer at least, though he is looking for more additions as well.
Midfield is an area of concern and there is interest in Marseille star Boubacar Kamara, who is also out of contract at the end of the season.
