Man United icon Sir Alex Ferguson’s orders over Zinedine Zidane as Glazers consider change

Published

on

Manchester United may turn to Zinedine Zidane amid their dire form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

And, if they do land the Real Madrid icon, it’ll come years after Sir Alex Ferguson first considered snapping him up. The 49-year-old would be an exciting appointment at Old Trafford, particularly given his track record as a serial winner.

United had expected to challenge the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea for the Premier League title this season.

However, the Red Devils have endured a chastening campaign under Solskjaer and are on a run of six defeats from their last 12 matches.

With United sliding down the table, and already out of the Carabao Cup, the Glazers are currently mulling over their options.

Brendan Rodgers and Mauricio Pochettino appear to be frontrunners for the post, even if they’re happy at current clubs Leicester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

But, in recent days, Zidane’s name has been thrown around.

The 49-year-old is presently a free agent after leaving Real Madrid back in the summer due to a disagreement with Los Blancos president Florentino Perez.

And United appear to be on his trail as they contemplate relieving Solskjaer of his duties after nearly three years at the helm.

If successful, they’ll finally do what Ferguson could not: bring the Frenchman to Old Trafford.

It was Tony Cascarino, speaking on talkSPORT earlier this year, who revealed Ferguson had ordered him to help him in his mission to bring Zidane to the club during his playing days.

Cascarino recalled: “What some managers do, and I’ll tell you Fergie was the king at this, he’d always somehow find a way to send a message to somebody.

“I was in a dressing room and met Sir Alex in Marseille, he was my manager for a day in a testimonial, I’m in a dressing room as he says to me, ‘how’s your French?’

“I said, ‘it’s ok’, and he said to me, ‘have a word with the number ten’ and that number ten happened to be Zinedine Zidane!”

In the end, however, United failed to sign Zidane.

The Frenchman had a glittering career at Bordeaux and Juventus before retiring at Real Madrid back in 2006.

And United also missed out on other big names at the time, ranging from Paul Gascoigne to Alan Shearer.

Now, with Solskjaer feeling the heat, Zidane is set to be pursued.

And whether United are able to strike gold with the Frenchman is something only time will tell.

Speaking last month, meanwhile, former France boss Raymond Domenech called on Zidane to consider replacing Solskjaer at Old Trafford.

“What job is he made for when he’s been a multiple Champions League winner with Real Madrid?” he said.

“What’s left? [Manchester] City, United, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich? There’s five or six clubs.

“After that, if he takes another club, they’re a step down for him, for someone of his level.

“There comes a point when you can’t let that possibility slip.

“He’s also got, with Ronaldo, a direct relay, a translator from Spanish to English.

“He’ll also get away from people who say he only achieved what he did because it was Real Madrid because he knew the players and he’ll prove he’s really a top manager.

“That’s why I tell him: go for it. Or stay in your comfort, but I don’t think that’s his desire.”

Should United sack Solskjaer, he’ll become the fourth managerial casualty of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Mourinho have all previously sacked after failing to live up to expectations at Old Trafford.

Casemiro is now in a massive dilemma. United’s offer is so succulent that it guarantees the midfielder and his family’s stability for ‘decades’.

On the other hand, by accepting such a contract, the Brazilian international will have to give up on immediate sporting glory.

Moving to Old Trafford would mean swapping Champions League for Europa League and it is a hard decision to make for someone who is currently a European Champion and has won the continent’s premier competition five times.

AS claim the situation must be resolved soon. If Casemiro gives the green light to leave, then Real Madrid would demand a fee of at least £68million (80 million euros) to sell him.
