Manchester United could appoint Darren Fletcher as caretaker boss after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer departs.
The MEN report Fletcher is in line to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the board making a decision to sack the Norwegian.
United face Villarreal on Tuesday at 5.45pm and would have been scheduled to fly out on Monday.
The expectation is that some of Solskjaer’s coaching staff will depart, leaving technical director Darren Fletcher to step in.
This is an unenviable position for Fletcher to be in. He has no managerial experience.
He does know the players, and the club, and has been seen working with them in training over the past few weeks.
So while this brings familiarity, it does not really give a fresh approach, and United will be working to try and bring a permanent solution as quickly as possible.
The difference between Fletcher’s situation and the one Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came into is the job title.
Fletcher will be ‘caretaker manager’, which will only place him in charge for a maximum of one or two games.
Solskjaer was the ‘interim manager’, brought in to guide United between December 2018 and May 2019 on a fixed term contract, although United would make this permanent earlier.
United are looking for a permanent manager, although could settle for an interim one. It just won’t be Fletcher, who has even less credentials than Solskjaer did for this role.
We can only hope for United to come away from the Villarreal game with at least a draw. It is terrible mismanagement by the board to potentially leave this fixture to a total rookie.
