Manchester United continue to labour in their efforts to sign new players this summer and as we approach the end of June, not one fresh face has walked through the doors since Erik ten Hag took over at the end of last season.
The Dutchman has a huge task ahead of him as he looks to rebuild a depleted squad, and it has now been revealed that he wants five new signings this summer.
Although he has so far failed in those efforts, the first could be just around the corner as Antony’s deal from Ajax is reportedly ‘close’ to completion.

Ten Hag wants five signings
Erik ten Hag’s mission this summer is to make a start on a complete rebuild of the Manchester United squad and it has been revealed by the Manchester Evening News that the Dutchman has requested five new signings in order to get the ball rolling.
Yet in the month since United’s last game of the 2021/22 Premier League season, not one deal has been agreed on and things are looking bleak, while the upcoming campaign starts in just under seven weeks. However, it is hoped that things will pick up, as club officials work tirelessly on negotiations.
The Red Devils have already been strongly linked with Ajax trio Antony, Jurrien Timber and Lisandro Martinez, of which a deal for the former is suspected to be nearing completion, while Christian Eriksen and Ten Hag’s top target Frenkie de Jong are also on the list.
Antony signing now ‘close’
After plenty of reports linking Manchester United to Ajax defensive duo Jurrien Timber and Lisandro Martinez, the Red Devils have stepped up their pursuit of teammate Antony, with a deal for the Brazilian winger now described as being ‘close’ to completion.
According to The Sun, United are in advanced negotiations with the Eredivisie champions and will reportedly agree on a £40 million fee for the Brazilian, with club officials having flown to Amsterdam on Monday for official talks.
Antony recorded 12 goals and 10 assists in 33 appearances last season as he played a key role in Ajax claiming the Dutch title for the third time of Ten Hag’s tenure, and has been on the radar of other European clubs this summer.
United prepared for Martial to stay
It was expected by many that Anthony Martial would depart Manchester United on a permanent basis this summer after sealing a loan move to Sevilla for the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign back in January, having fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.
The Frenchman had an underwhelming spell with the La Liga side, however, and recorded just one goal and one assists in 12 games during his four month stay, which followed up just one goal in 11 appearances for United in the first part of the season.
As a result of this, there are now a lack of options for Martial beyond this summer and as reported by the Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils are braced for the forward to remain at Old Trafford for the 2022/23 campaign as “nobody is breaking the door down” for his services.
