Man United ‘very close’ to long-term target transfer breakthrough as saga nears end

Manchester United are reportedly ‘very close’ to agreeing a deal for Raphael Varane.

The Real Madrid star is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top transfer target as he plots a route to the Premier League title.

And, a decade after Sir Alex Ferguson first tried to land the France international, the Norwegian could be about to succeed.

Manchester United are a big club ready to do big things this summer.

They’ve already sealed two transfers so far, landing Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton from Borussia Dortmund and Aston Villa respectively.

And they’re now hopeful Varane will sign on the dotted line, with the Red Devils keen to capitalise on the player’s contractual situation at Real Madrid.

The France international has just a year left on his current Los Blancos deal, meaning the La Liga giants face selling him now or losing him for nothing next year.

While Carlo Ancelotti wants the 2018 World Cup winner to stay put, however, no renewal looks in sight.

And Diario AS journalist Edu Cornago has claimed a deal taking Varane to Old Trafford is now ‘very close’ to being completed this summer.

“The Varane-United agreement is very close to being produced,” he said on Twitter.

“Varane welcomes the option of going to Manchester. In Madrid, he is looking for a sports project that, for the moment, does not give him.”

Varane is keen to try his luck somewhere else having spent a decade in Spain.

He’s won three La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns during that time, clocking up 18 honours overall.

And United are now hopeful he’ll partner Harry Maguire in the coming years ahead, in a partnership that has the potential to be the best in the entire Premier League.

Varane could be signed for a fee in the region of £40million to £50m, making him a bargain in today’s world.

And Real may then use funds on a deal for Paris Saint-Germain hitman Kylian Mbappe, who could leave the Parc des Princes on a free transfer in 12 months’ time.

United also want to sign Varane’s compatriot, Eduardo Camavinga.

They’d initially targeted a deal for Declan Rice but, given how West Ham would want £100m for their prized asset, have now decided to switch focus.

Yet they also face competition from PSG when it comes to the 18-year-old who, like Varane and Mbappe, has just a year left on his contract left to run.

Meanwhile, regarding Varane, United legend Nicky Butt recently urged his old side to get a deal for the Real Madrid star over the line.

“For me, next season has to be about getting some silverware back in that trophy cabinet for Manchester United,” Butt said.

“It’s about getting the right players who will allow you to challenge for trophies.

“It’s a winning club, so we can’t go this long without silverware.

“The biggest thing that needs addressing for me at Manchester United this summer is that centre-back position; we need a partner for Harry Maguire.

“It has to be someone that’s going to be compatible with Maguire.

“If you spend the kind of money you did on Harry Maguire, you then have to follow it up by bringing someone in who can play with him.

“He’s the club captain; Victor Lindelof is too similar to him. It needs to be someone with pure, blistering pace, someone who can play out from the back.

“Everyone talks about Raphael Varane. I understand he’s a little bit older than most people would perhaps like, but you just have to go back to the days of Teddy Sheringham.

“I think we bought him when he was 32, and we went and won the treble with him. If Varane is available, then I’d go all out for him.”
