Manchester United are plotting an audacious ‘contract offer’ to sign Bayern Munich star Leon Goretzka on a free transfer next summer, according to reports.
The Red Devils are desperate to sign Paul Pogba to a new contract ahead of the Frenchman’s contract expiring in June 2022.
Pogba has been heavily linked with both Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, but United will be looking to fill the midfield void if the France international leaves Old Trafford.
German sports magazine Sport Bild reports that United are eyeing up a potential swoop for Goretzka in 2022.
Goretzka’s current deal with Bayern expires in June 2022, but the Red Devils have reportedly made contact with his agent and made a concrete offer.
Bayern have made an offer of €10m to €12m to sign Goretzka to a new deal, but the German midfielder wants a significant increase in his salary.
According to Sport Bild, Goretzka wants a hefty wage package of €20m to match Leroy Sane’s salary at Bayern.
While negotiations between Goretzka’s representatives and Bayern have stalled, United have made an offer that exceeds the Bundesliga champions’ current proposal.
However, the Red Devils would face fierce competition from Real Madrid and Barcelona in the race to sign Goretzka next summer.
Goretzka, 26, made 32 appearances across all competitions last season and scored eight times and registered nine assists.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to reinforce his midfield options this summer ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Red Devils have been linked with Liverpool target Eduardo Camavinga, who could reportedly leave Rennes for £35m.
United and Liverpool are also reportedly set to challenge Barcelona in the race to sign Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez, who has been valued at around £34.3m.
Solskjaer’s men kicked off their pre-season with a 2-1 win over Derby County at Pride Park on Sunday.
