Marcus Rashford received heartwarming letter from nine-year-old fan – ‘You inspired me’

Rashford, who is just 23-years-old, missed a penalty in the final against Italy and immediately faced a torrent of racist attacks online.

In his hometown of Whitington, a mural of the Manchester United forward was even vandalised – though this was later covered with messages of love and support by local residents.

Shows of solidarity have also been offered to Rashford from high profile figures, including Lewis Hamilton, Prince William and Gary Lineker.

This sentiment was shared by Dexter Rosier, a nine-year-old boy who penned a letter to Rashford following England’s loss.

The letter said: “Dear Marcus Rashford.

“I hope you won’t be sad for long because you are such a good person.”

The young boy went on to explain that Rashford’s efforts in securing free school meals for children during the school holidays last year “inspired” him.

Mr Rosier continued: ”Last year you inspired me to help people less fortunate.

“Then last night you inspired me again, to always be brave.

“I’m proud of you, you will always be a hero.

“From Dexter Rosier. Age nine.”

In a statement shared online, Rashford noted that he was “on the verge of tears” because of the support he has received.

He added: “I can take critique of my performance all day long, my penalty wasn’t good enough, it should have gone in.

“But I will never apologise for who I am and where I came from.

“I’ve felt no prouder moment than wearing these three lions on my chest and seeing my family cheer me in a crowd of tens of thousands.

“The messages I’ve received today have been positively overwhelming and seeing the response in Withington had me on the verge of tears.”

Rashford also shared some of the letters he has received from children, one of which was Mr Rosier’s.

The young boy’s note even got the attention of Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Ranvir Singh, with Ms Reid slamming the “hideous” racist abuse being sent to Rashford.
