‘Priorities’: Romano says Chelsea are now in talks with midfielder over signing a new contract

Fabrizio Romano stated on his Here We Go podcast that Chelsea had entered into discussions with Jorginho about extending his contract.

Jorginho still has two years left on his current deal, but the Blues would like to retain his services for even longer.

They cannot be blamed for wanting to tie down the Italian following his excursions over the past few months.

He played a key role in Chelsea’s Champions League conquest and proved even more vital during Italy’s run to European Championship success.

The 29-year-old and Emerson Palmieri became the tenth and 11th players to claim double European glory in the same season.

Some people within the industry have even thrust Jorginho’s name forward for a Ballon d’Or nomination.

Maurizio Sarri, Lorenzo Insigne, and most recently, Gianfranco Zola, were strong in their suggestions that the midfielder should win football’s top individual honour.

It seems only logical that Chelsea wants to prolong his stint, which Romano claimed is the club’s current ambitions.

“Chelsea are working on Jorginho’s contract as one of the priorities this summer and the coming months,” said the transfer guru.

“They want to Jorginho to stay. He has a contract until 2023 but they are already talking with him over a potential extension.

“It will take some time because Chelsea usually works with calm in these situations.”

Although penning Jorginho in for a fresh agreement is important, there are other players who need attending to first.

Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, and Antonio Rudiger all run out of contract next summer.

They each played a massive part towards Thomas Tuchel’s defensive overhaul.

Armando Broja did recently commit his allegiances to Chelsea until 2026.
