Of late, Angel Di Maria has popped up as a transfer target for Barcelona ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Catalan giants are on the lookout for a replacement for contract rebel Ousmane Dembele and have identified the Argentine as a possible target.
The 34-year-old is set to be available on a free transfer as his contract with Paris Saint-Germain is set to expire on June 30. A move to Juventus had been mooted, but as reported by Cuatro, the veteran Argentine international wants to join Barcelona in the summer.
As per the report, Di Maria is seeking a contract of just one-year duration so that he can be in good shape for the upcoming FIFA World Cup at the end of 2022.
Barcelona are reportedly working on a deal for the former Real Madrid winger, with manager Xavi Hernandez believed to have spoken to Di Maria to explain to him the club’s proposal.
However, any move to Barcelona for Di Maria will come with a major reduction in his wages.
The winger used to earn a hefty €13 million per year at PSG, but at Camp Nou, that will drop significantly, considering the poor financial health Barcelona find themselves in.
President Joan Laporta is planning to introduce a maximum cap of €10 million per year on player salaries.
And considering Di Maria’s age, the club would be willing to offer him a contract worth around just €2 million-a-year, claims the report.
Di Maria is understood to have stopped negotiations with Juventus when the option of Barcelona presented itself.
However, whether he will be open to dropping his wages by such a drastic amount to secure a move to Camp Nou remains to be seen.
