Rangnick ‘identifies’ three potential signings Man United could make to fix ‘area of weakness’

Ralf Rangnick has identified three potential midfielders who Manchester United should look to sign in the transfer market, according to reports.

ESPN claim the new interim manager at Old Trafford has instructed scouts to keep a close watch on England international Jude Bellingham, RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara, and Kelvin Phillips of Premier League rivals Leeds United.

The US-based outlet also report that Rangnick highlighted the midfield as an ‘area of weakness’ and will look to make a significant addition in the coming transfer windows, although United believe it will be difficult to make any serious moves in January.

ESPN say Erling Haaland was another name mentioned by the German as a potential summer recruit, during the interview process.

Mali international, Haidara, has been frequently linked with a move to Old Trafford since Rangnick was appointed last week.

The rumours were even addressed by RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff this week when he said: “Doudou is one of my favourite players, I told him today. He fits us perfectly. Of course it is also a player that Ralf Rangnick loves. Nothing will burn for now.”

As for Bellingham, barely a day goes by without speculation surrounding the youngster’s future, and earlier this week The Mirror claimed Liverpool were leading the race to sign the Dortmund midfielder.

Phillips has also been linked with a move to Anfield of late, with The Sun reporting on Thursday that the 26-year-old would turn down a transfer to United due to their historic rivalry with Leeds, although he could be open to joining Liverpool.

In the meantime, Rangnick is likely to select Scott McTominay and Fred in the centre of the park against Norwich City on Sunday.

The pair started last weekend’s win over Crytsal Palace, with Donny van de Beek and Juan Mata making up an unconventional midfield pair in Wednesday’s draw with Young Boys. Nemanja Matic, who played in defence that night, is also an option in the middle.
