Juventus star is close to joining Arsenal, with Sport in Spain claiming that the Gunners are looking set to pay around £25 million for the 29-year-old.
Morata is coming towards the end of a two-year spell on loan at Juventus. He has scored 20 league goals during his time in Turin. But Juve are keen to keep the former Chelsea man beyond this season.
However, the Old Lady are not prepared to pay the £30 million fee that would trigger the option to keep the Spain international. And with that, Arsenal have seemingly put themselves on pole position.
In fact, Sport claims that Arsenal are very close to signing Morata. The Gunners are apparently ready to pay £25 million to bring the forward to the Emirates.
Morata close to joining Arsenal
It is a surprise to hear claims that Morata is close to joining Arsenal and becoming their second signing after Marquinhos. It had appeared that Gabriel Jesus was their top target for this window. And talks with the Manchester City are well advanced.
Morata has never been the most prolific goalscorer throughout his career. He has never managed more than 15 league goals in a single campaign.
But he has played for a number of the best sides in Europe. Morata has won league titles in Spain and Italy. He has also lifted the Champions League and Europa League.
And clearly, he is not going to cost a huge amount. Antonio Conte meanwhile, once labelled Morata a ‘fantastic‘ striker.
Nevertheless, plenty of Arsenal fans will probably be underwhelmed if Morata is indeed close to making a move. They look set to offload one striker with an average record in Alexandre Lacazette.
Supporters will not be particularly excited if Morata is the man to replace him.
