Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea’s injury woes appear to have been compounded even more this week, with Christian Pulisic having picked up an ankle injury whilst on international duty.
The American, who has only just been cleared to return to action after overseeing a period of self-isolation due to a positive test of Covid-19, played in two out of the USA’s three matches during the break.
He came through the clash against Canada on Monday unscathed and even admitted that he “felt good” after making his long-awaited return to action.
However, the winger could well be out of this weekend’s clash against Aston Villa having succumbed to an ankle problem during a 4-1 victory against Honduras in San Pedro Sula.
The Chelsea man was replaced in the 62nd minute having appeared to have taken a heavy blow shortly before. USA coach Gregg Berhalter has since confirmed an ankle injury and that he is set to return to his club for more tests.
Following the game, he said: “Christian has a slight ankle injury. We’re going to get more info on it when he goes back to London, the severity of it.”
Should the injury be serious enough to keep him out of the weekend’s game, it will be the latest in a long line of problems that Pulisic has had to endure since his 2019 move from Borussia Dortmund.
According to transfermarkt, he missed a total of 14 games throughout the 2019/20 season, whilst there were 15 on the sidelines last term.
Meanwhile, he has only played in one game so far this season, that being the 3-0 win against Crystal Palace on the opening day – a game in which he scored.
His current knock is also the latest in a long line of potential absentees Thomas Tuchel has to consider against Aston Villa this weekend.
Reece James is already suspended after his red card against Liverpool, whilst Thiago Silva is currently set to be banned for five days by FIFA after missing international duty.
Romelu Lukaku and N’Golo Kante are both injury doubts, while Kai Havertz was also suffering with illness whilst on international duty with Germany.
