Manchester United comfortably dispatched a tame Brentford side to secure three points in their final home game on Monday evening, with goals from Bruno Fernandes, Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane ensuring that United end the season on a high note.

The result yesterday was hardly the main talking point, however. Several senior members of United’s squad were making their Old Trafford bow, with Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani and Phil Jones all featuring despite their expiring contracts. Jesse Lingard is also out of contract this summer but was left on the bench for the 90 minutes.

Christian Eriksen has been linked with a move to United this summer and the Danish midfielder is available as a free agent following his extraordinary rise back into football.

The 30-year-old went into cardiac arrest at last year’s European Championship but has defied all odds by returning to the Premier League in terrific form.

The former Tottenham star was given a warm reception by the Old Trafford faithful when he made his way to the corner flags and Brentford manager Thomas Frank has now admitted that he ‘loved’ that sentiment.
